Obituary

Serena Cyprian Burgess, a woman of remarkable strength, faith, and resilience, transitioned into eternal rest on May 7, 2026, at the age of 73.

Born in Charleston, South Carolina, on June 28, 1952, but raised in spirit by the community of New Haven, Connecticut, Serena spent most of her life there before later residing in East Haven. She was a proud graduate of James Hillhouse High School, Class of 1971. Serena was also a member of Community Baptist Church, where her faith was nurtured through worship, fellowship, and her lifelong love of gospel music. A gifted singer, she performed with local gospel groups in her younger years, touching hearts with her voice and devotion to the Lord.

Serena dedicated much of her life to caring for others. She worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant at several facilities in the greater New Haven area before retiring. Her most notable and cherished years were spent at the now‑closed Bentley Gardens in West Haven, CT, where she formed lasting bonds with coworkers and residents alike. Her compassion, patience, and gentle spirit made her a natural caregiver.

Serena found joy in life’s simple pleasures: good food, stylish dressing, all genres of music, and most of all, time spent with family. Her presence was warm, her humor unforgettable, and her loyalty unwavering. Those who knew her can attest to her fighting spirit, resilience, and deep, abiding faith. She faced every life challenge set before her with courage and grace, never losing her love for God or for the people she held close.

Serena leaves behind two children who were the center of her world: her son, Severic Burgess (La’Trece), and her daughter, Shironda Burgess. She is also survived by her beloved grandson, Brandon Moncrease .

Serena was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Walter Bligen Sr. and Anna May Green. She was also predeceased by her husband, Alphonza L. Burgess. Serena was further preceded in death by her cherished granddaughter, Alexus Eaddy, and by the family’s beloved Yorkshire Terrier, Chase, whom she adored and showered with affection throughout his life.

In addition, Serena leaves behind her loving siblings:

Walter Bligen Jr. (The Late Essie), Walter Bligen III (Patricia), Pastor Loretta Hamilton, Alvin Bligen (Juanita), and Jacqueline Samuels, all of whom shared bonds of family, love, and support with her.

She is further survived by a host of relatives, extended family, and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.

People like Serena are rare, truly one of a kind! Her legacy of faith, love, and strength will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.

A Homegoing service will be held Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 12:00 pm at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight St, New Haven, CT. Family and friends may view from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.
