Obituary

Sarah Lee Spruel was born June 18, 1938, in Greenville, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Hebrew O. Spell and Sarah Clemons Spell. Sarah moved from Greenville to New Haven, Connecticut, in 1955, where she met the love of her life, her late husband Noble A. Spruel. Sarah held several manufacturing jobs, retiring from Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in 2001. She was a faithful member of Pitts Chapel Unified Freewill Baptist Church, where she served on the Mother Board and sang in choirs throughout the years. She loved God, her family, traveling, and was well known as a great cook.

Her brother, Heber R. Spell, survives her. She leaves to mourn her son, Stacy R. Spell (Virginia), and her daughters, Shirlene Randall Gibbs, Sydell Ladson, Verdell Achu, and Carolyn Renee Spruel, as well as a special niece, Brenda Chafin. She also leaves to cherish her memory 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, one great-great grand, and a host of extended family members and friends who will continue to honor her legacy.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Noble A. Spruel; her brothers, John I. Spell and William O. Spell; and her sisters, Florence Daughtry, Mary Magdalene Kendrick, Marjorie Lewis, and Ruth Howard, as well as her grandsons, Allen D. Spell, Noble S. Demand-Spell, great grandson, Roy Allen Spell, and a great nephew Marcus Warner.

A Homegoing service will be held Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at 11:00 A.M. at Pitts Chapel Unified Freewill Baptist Church, 64 Brewster Street, New Haven, followed by burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park. Family and friends may view at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M.
