Olive Jeanette Fletcher was born on November 22, 1928, in New Haven, Connecticut, to the late Charles E. Fletcher and Anna Francis Tribbett Fletcher.

A proud lifelong resident of New Haven, Olive often referred to herself as an “Old New Havener.” She graduated from Hillhouse High School and devoted many years of her life to education. Miss Fletcher was a preschool instructor at the Dixwell Q House and concluded her career as a math paraprofessional at Troup Middle School.

Olive was a woman of strong character—feisty, opinionated, proper, and strict, with a wonderfully dry sense of humor. She was never afraid to speak her mind, and her strong spirit, dignity, and unmistakable presence will long be remembered by those who knew and loved her. She believed in doing things properly and carried herself with discipline and pride.

Olive had a love for music and enjoyed playing the piano. She also loved to travel and explore the world. Throughout her life, Olive traveled extensively, visiting places including the Netherlands, Mexico, Egypt, Israel, France, Hawaii, England, the West Indies, and many other destinations. Her travels reflected her curiosity and appreciation for experiencing different places, people, and cultures.

Faith and service were important parts of Olive’s life. She was a lifetime member of Dixwell United Church of Christ, where she faithfully served her church and community. Olive was an emeritus member of the Missionary Board—an honor especially meaningful as she was the only person in the history of the Missionary Board to hold the title of emeritus member.

Olive was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Charles E. Fletcher and Anna Francis Tribbett Fletcher; her brothers, Edward, John, Everette, Albert, and Lawrence Fletcher; and her sisters, Eunice Fletcher Meyers and Gertrude Fletcher Stoner.

She leaves to cherish her memory many loving relatives, friends, former students, church family members, and all those whose lives were touched by her strength, wisdom, dry humor, and unforgettable personality.

Olive Jeanette Fletcher lived a long and meaningful life filled with faith, family, service, education, music, and adventure. Her legacy will live on in the many lives she touched and in the memories shared by all who were fortunate enough to know and love Miss Olive Fletcher. To her nieces and nephews, she will always be remembered simply as Aunt Olive.

A memorial service to celebrate Ms. Fletcher's life will be held Thursday, September 17, 2026, at 11:00 A.M. at Curvin K. Council Funeral Home, 128 Dwight Street, New Haven, followed by burial of her cremated remains in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
