Obituary

Evans Geneva Browning, born on November 26, 1937, in Camden, South Carolina, peacefully passed away on February 2, 2026. She was the beloved daughter of the late John Evans Murphy and the late Sallie Geneva Murphy.

Evans graduated from Norwich Free Academy in 1951, after which she pursued her nursing degree at the Vocational Training Field Service Center in New Haven, and received her certification from Grace New Haven Community Hospital. Her dedication to healthcare was reflected in her long tenure at Yale Psychiatric Institute, where she worked until her retirement in 2001. Even after retiring, Evans continued to serve her community through home service for various clients.

Evans was a treasured member of the Bible Gospel Center in Hamden, Connecticut, where she cultivated lasting friendships and enjoyed the fellowship of her congregation. She was known for her warmth, compassion, and willingness to assist family and friends in times of need. Her passions included cooking, knitting, sewing, reading, and solving puzzles.

She is survived by her children: daughter, Alison Browning Williams (Christopher) and son, Christopher Browning; her sister, Alice Frances Murphy of Owings Mills, Maryland; brother-in-law, Jesse Browning of New Haven, Connecticut; sister-in-law, Ernestine Browning of New Haven, Connecticut; her cherished grandson, Christopher Noel Williams; and her goddaughter and niece, Jaelyn Smith of Owings Mills, Maryland. Additionally, she leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Bible Gospel Center, located at 143 Leeder Hill Drive, Hamden, Connecticut. The visitation will take place from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by the service at 11:00 AM.
