Emanuel J. Gomez Sr, 97, passed away on May 27, 2026. He was born in New Haven CT in 1929, to the late parents Harry Gomez and Elizabeth (Brown) Gomez. Emanuel worked at Winchester Repeating Arms from 1947 until his retirement in 1991. He was a charter member of the union, served as conductor, and later legislative chairman. He also was the co-chairperson of the New Haven Peace Commission.
After retirement, he worked at Southern CT State University within the Campus Security Department. He also was an organizing member of The Descendants of Connecticut 29th Colored Regiment, a non-profit organization that preserves the legacy of the historic all Black Civil War Unit. Emanuel was a devoted member of Immanuel Missionary Baptist Church for over 55 years. He served as a member of the usher board, the choir, and father and mother board.
He proudly served as past President of the A. Phillip Randolph Institute, New Haven Branch. He also received a Proclamation from the City of New Haven, for a lifetime of Community Service, Greater New Haven, African American Historical Society. Emanuel was a humble and dedicated servant, who had become a published author of poetry. This shown throughout his love for his community, church and family. His legacy, accomplishments and memory will continue to live on.
Emanuel was preceded in death by his wife Cecelia A. Gomez of 63 years and his son Brian Wells. He leaves to cherish his memory his sons, Emanuel J. Gomez Jr. (Holly) and Eric Gomez, as well as six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
A celebration of his life and legacy will be held Friday, June 5, 2026, at 11:00 A.M. at Immanuel Missionary Baptist Church, 1324 Chapel St., New Haven, followed by burial in Evergreen Cemetery. Family and friends may attend a viewing at the church from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. The service will be livestreamed via Zoom at
