Diane Lucille Wilson, 72, of New Haven, Connecticut, transitioned peacefully on Thursday, August 6, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Diane was born on May 20, 1954, in New Haven, Connecticut, to the late Frances (Perry) Wilson and Earl Wilson.

She attended New Haven Public Schools and graduated from High School in the community in 1973.

Throughout her life, Diane held a variety of occupations before retiring from First Student Bus Company in 2023.

Diane was predeceased by her beloved sister, Joanne Wilson. She is survived by her loving brother, Mustafa Abdul Salam; her two children, who were the center of her world, Kamal Wilson and Tara Mix (Earl); and her four beautiful granddaughters, Ke’Ara, Matea’, Zaliyah, and Zhane Wilson, whom she loved dearly and devoted much of her time to. Being a grandmother was one of Diane’s greatest joys, and she proudly embraced the title of “Best Gram” ever. She also leaves her three little guys, Julian, Jay, and Jaxon Threadgill, who held a special place in her heart and kept her going. She always made it a priority to attend every dance recital, play, basketball, football, and soccer game, wanting to be there for each moment.

Diane was affectionately known as “Mama Di” and “Lady Di” by relatives, friends, and those whose lives she touched. “Mama Di,” a nickname lovingly given to her by her extended family was a kind, gentle, compassionate, and loving soul. She found her greatest joy in being surrounded by the people she cared for. Her warmth and nurturing spirit extended far beyond her immediate family, and she became a motherly presence to many.

Diane touched the lives of countless children and adults throughout the community, especially the young people of Nation Drum Squad and Drill Corps. During her years with the drill team, Mama Di traveled to various cities and states to watch the team compete, cheering them on while building meaningful relationships with the youth that would last forever. She was more than a supporter—she was an encourager, a protector, and a familiar face who made the children feel loved. Within her family & extended family,

Mama Di was an anchor. She was always suggesting ways for everyone to come together, spend time with one another, and create memories. She believed in the importance of family and made sure there was always room for one more person at the table. And if you knew Diane, you certainly knew about her infamous macaroni salad—a family favorite that had everyone asking for more after the very first bite.

As Lady Di, she was a wonderful friend who was always ready to share a joyful moment. Her love of soulful music and dance could light up a room, and her presence brought comfort, laughter, and warmth to those around her. Diane’s love was felt deeply by her family, her friends, and the many lives she touched throughout the years. Her kindness, laughter, dancing spirit, nurturing heart, and unwavering love for her family will remain in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be greatly missed, forever loved, and will live on in our hearts.

Services will be held Thursday, August 13, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Transformation Christian Church, 31 Sperry Street, New Haven, followed by burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park, 90 Pine Rock Ave., New Haven. Family and friends may attend a viewing at the church from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m.
