Bennie R. Smith, 81, of New Haven, entered into eternal rest on January 9, 2015. He was the widower of Gladys Smith.

Born in Nakina, NC, August 19, 1933, he was the son of the late Vonish and Della Smith.

Prior to retiring, Mr. Smith was employed at Yale University and Winchester Repeating Arms.

He is survived by daughters, Theresa Scott (Alex) and Marietta Smith; a son, Ralph Smith; brother, Otis Smith (Mary); sisters, Glenora King and Dora M. Edge; 12 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by a son, Kennie Smith; brothers, David L. Smith, Sr. and Ausburn Smith; and a sister, Blanchie McCarthy.

A celebration of Mr. Smith's life and legacy will be held Friday, January 16, 2015, at 11:00 A.M. at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 26 Edwards St., Hamden. Viewing will be held at the church from 10:00-11:00 A.M. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
